la familia
An Intervarsity (the Christian fellowship I was a part of in college) wedding is like a family reunion. Chances are you will either (1) recognize, (2) know the name of, (3) have gone overseas with, (4) have discipled or been discipled by, and/or (5) been close personal friends with at least 1/3 of the weddings guests. Despite the large numbers of guests there will be few to no single guys to consider because you are inevitably "related" to everyone there. And when the bride and groom, two of your former staff workers, marry each other on the campus of your alma mater and also happen to belong to the same Oakland church community you were a part of for 6 months after college, this only increases that fraction. The wedding was rumored to have 400 people in attendance. This means that I “knew” probably around 150 people at the wedding. I hugged at least 100 people. I tried to have meaningful 2 minute conversations with at least 50 of them. I even managed several significant 10-20 minute conversations in between pill pops and nose blows. (Remember, I’m sick)
Numbers aside, it was a beautiful, long anticipated day. Javier and Yu-Shuan have been faithful partners, friends and ministers for the last six years. They have cracked me up to the point of tears and side aches. They even prayed with me and some of my P-town friends about where God wanted me after this summer. Those prayers were instrumental in bringing me and my heart around to the idea of Pomona. Wow.
So for those who care to know, I have updates on at least six generations of Cal-IVCF staff and students, New Hope Covenant community people, and New Church Berkeley people. Jobs, engagements, weddings, pregnancies, and BABIES!!
