China 2007.
Most infuriating moment. Walking to a bar with my brother, we were behind a group of four young, possibly drunk Americans. An old beggar man went up to one of the girls and she yelled "Fuck off!" and threw her arm as if to get him off of it. I was in shock as we walked quickly around the group. A minute later, inside, I became agitated at myself for not doing something (?) and physically upset at the wrong I had witnessed.
Most political moment. Our Chinese guide telling my inquiring mom, "In China, we like Clinton. We don't like Bush so much. Bush likes war."
Most funny-clumsy moment. Falling off the back of my brother's bicycle in slow motion.
Buyers-remorse moment. After realizing that I bought that pair of jeans from the vendor at the Silk Market, not because I actually needed them, but because I had already taken up five minutes of her time and I felt guilty.
Best Family bonding. The first Wednesday in Xi'an when we ate our way through the Muslim district, and explored the side streets, before Dad got sick. That and eating tangerines on the train from Beijing.
Cutest kids. All the pre-potty trained Chinese toddlers are in these heavily padded clothes that make them look all the fatter. Their butts are exposed because there is a giant slit in the back of all their pants so that they can squat anywhere without taking off their clothing.
Worst moment. Tossing and turning in bed with nausea, with each turn envisioning someone trying to force feed me some dish (this was after a banquet filled weekend with family friends). Later vomitting. Twice.
The 'Oh shit I'm not going to cry' moment. Being led by my brother to pray for our dad.
Best make your brother feel awkward moment. Telling him I thought his roommate was kind of cute. (His roommate is Korean and speaks no English. They communicate entirely in Mandarin.)
Best make your sister feel awkward moment. Being on several outings in which I was essentially the chaperone/third wheel.
Best mutual sibling awkward moment. When we both held alchoholic beverages in our hands at the same time, in the same place. That, and standing near the dance floor at a club (not dancing) observing the Beijing night life.
Best make fun of your white mother moment. When she, attempting to take a picture counted to three in Chinese, only she really said something closer to "one, two, four!
Best time. Seeing Beijing from the back of my brother's bike.
