Generation Gap

Last night we took about 30 of our youth to the beach for an end of the school year bonfire. It was a lot of fun to see the kids frolic (cause there isn't a better word) in the ocean at 7:30 at night, fully clothed. It made the age divide all the more evident. There were other things that exaggerated this.

Like when J said, "Yeah they made us wear shorts that were so old and super short, they were like from the 1990s!"

Every time I pick up youth on Thursday nights I am greeted with a chorus of "102.7! 102.7!!", which is our local, super poppy/obnoxious radio station. I acquiesce because I remember being their age and wanting music on all the time. The music they like is, bad, sometimes very bad. Not just inappropriate, but sometimes just real lame.

I think I must have lost brain cells from the vapid song lyrics, but here are a few I remember:

"Beautiful girl, you make me suicidal, suicidal, suicidal"
"Imma hot shorty, you're a hot hunny"
"Back in 1999 when I did my first crime"
"You'll never find another shorty like miiiiine"
"Girl Imma shakin tryna get to you, and that booty"

But then I think back on the pop songs of my youth. With stellar sentiments like:

"Close to me you're like my mother"
"MMMBop"
"I feel a little poke coming through"
"I'm a barbie girl, in a barbie world"

Still, for all the lame pop songs I grew up with, I would have NEVER asked my youth worker (had I had one) "Do you mack on your boyfriend?" WTH? I will not divulge the answer to this question.
